State & National Mottos
Director of Moms for Ohio Testifies Before Senate Education Committee PDF Print E-mail

I am here today on behalf of Moms for Ohio to ask for your support for HB 184editor1_1.jpg which we believe will encourage schools through out Ohio to display our state and national mottos, “With God All Things Are Possible” and “In God We Trust”.

We all share the same dreams for our children.  We want them to be happy and successful.  We want them to be wise enough to make good choices and brave enough to stand by them in the face of peer pressure.  We hope they will become compassionate, hard-working adults, adults who understand as much about the responsibilities of being a United States Citizen, as they do about the rewards.  And we want them to have the education that they will need to one day go in pursuit of their own dreams.  But if we give them that education without giving them the values that they will need to live successful lives, than that education becomes meaningless.

Today, under the leadership of Senate President Bill Harris, the Ohio Senate voted unanimously to support HB 184, a bill which would require public schools to display donated copies of our national motto “In God We Trust” or our state motto “With God All Things Are Possible. The bill has already been approved in the Ohio House and will now return to the House so that the House can approve the changes were made in the Senate.

We are very grateful to Senate President Bill Harris and all the members of the Ohio Senate for their support for HB 184.  Time and again, our state legislators have proven their ability to sucessfully meet the challenges we face and we are grateful for their efforts.

In July 2006 Governor Taft signed legislation requiring all Ohio school districts and schools that receive donated copies of our National Motto, "In God We Trust", and the Ohio State Motto, "With God All Things Are Possible", to display these inspiring mottos in school classrooms, cafeterias, and auditoriums. The law took effect on Oct 12. and families can now donate displays to their local schools.

Henceforth, whenever an Ohio student, parent, or other party provides a suitable copy of the national / state motto to their (public) school, that school is now required by law to display it. Although private and parochial schools in Ohio are not required by law to display donated mottos they are also being encouraged to do so.

National Motto Advocates, a Steubenville Ohio non-profit organization, one of the groups who helped to support the passage of this bill has designed the displayed graphic.  Although families are free to design their own, anyone who is looking for a place to purchase one for their school may want to visit their website:  National Motto Advocate.
